On the Westside of Syracuse, N.Y., healthy habits can be difficult to nurture. But community members are working together to help themselves in many ways. A healthy lifestyle means more than a visit to the doctor. Besides taking care of their physical needs, people are also tending to their emotional, spiritual, social and intellectual well-being in a minority community where household incomes can often fall short of the poverty level and language can be a challenge for the Latino residents. This magazine reflects their efforts in all of these areas. A print version of this magazine also has been published.
Steve Davis, chair of the Department of Newspaper and Online Journalism, organized the project and directed the reporters. Professors Emilie Davis and Mike Davis led our teams of editors and photographers, respectively. Ashley Kang directed the production of the print magazine. (Last year’s initial project, the print magazine VOX/VOZ, explored some of the language challenges faced by citizens in this community.)
Student Abby Legge executed all the design for this tablet, with the help and counsel of Claudia Strong, a Newhouse professor.
We also appreciate the expertise of Jon Glass, executive producer at thenewshouse.com at the Newhouse School, who advised on the data visuals and graphics; and of Jonnell Robinson, Syracuse University community geographer.
A special thanks goes to Maarten Jacobs, director of the Near Westside Initiative, and to all the community members and organizations that helped us throughout the project and were generous with their time and ideas.
